Spaces and Exchanges - Song

Black crow- Angus and Julia Stone (2010)

Angus and Julia Stone are an Australian folk and indie pop group, formed in 2006 by brother and sister.
Angus & Julia Stone have released four studio albums: A Book Like This (2007), Down the Way (2010), Angus & Julia Stone (2014), and Snow (2017). They won 5 awards from 9 nominations like the Single of the Year for "Big jet plane" (2009), their most famous song.
"Black crow" is part of their greatest album: Down the way.

In this video, a man who's been in prison for a long time, gets three pills delivered every day, which arrive through a hole in the wall. The man imagines his life as a free person but he is confronted with the truth, he's in prison. One day, he decides not to take the pills and he crawls into the pipe where the pills come in, in order to escape. During his escape, he meets a woman in her cell who is going to join him and leave with him. Then they arrive in a vast place where they meet dozens of crows carrying boxes full of pills, which they bring into the pipes. They see light and they run towards the opening. The video ends when we see the two lovers outside, admiring the beauty of nature and freedom.

This song can be linked to the notion of "Spaces and Exchanges" for some reasons.
First of all, we find a good illustration of the spaces. Indeed, the video begins in a prison cell and ends in a very large and natural place. So there is a contrast between these two spaces which are totally opposed. There is an evolution of the space, throughout the video, where the prisoner leaves a reduced and oppressive space, to find freedom and life outside. Moreover, some lyrics show the protagonist's desire to escape from this space and to regain his lost freedom:

"Eyes from the tree take me down the way
Red riders of the dark
Help me through this maze
Do you know, mister, of this place?"

The chorus illustrates the call for help from the man:
Won't you help me be on my way?
Won't you help me be on my way?
So I can set me free"

Then, reccording to the "exchanges", there is first an exchange between humans when the man meets the woman, who is also a prisoner. They get together and decide to escape from this place. Then, the spectator understands that the crows deliver pills to the prisoners which have the effect of weakening them and limiting escape attempts. We can therefore say that there is an exchange made of the pleasure (represented by the pills) given to the prisoners, and the non-rebellion of the latter who do not revolt. The prisoners are manipulated by the crows that control them and chase them when the two characters try to escape. Finally, there is a logical exchange between the initial space (the prison) and the freedom attained. However, we can think that the two lovers have actually died, the death symbolized by the space of freedom.

The lyrics:
Eyes from the tree take me down the way
Red riders of the dark
Help me through this maze
Do you know, mister, of this place?
Do you know, mister?
No time to waste
Won't you help me be on my way?
Won't you help me be on my way?
So I can set me free
Saw murder in her eyes
The dark of a thousand crows
Cold thriller in disguise
Blue shadows stitched to her toes
Do you know, mister, of this place?
Do you know, mister?
No time to waste
There's propergand for everyman
On the paperstand you know
When will the spinsters face
Let give that twist of grace you know
Do you know, mister, of this place?
Do you know, mister?
No time to waste
